The Australian Computer Society Professional year program has gained significant attention these days. This is basically an orientation Program, delivered online by the ACS.

The ACS Professional Year Program is compulsory and a DIBP requirement.

Typically the Australian Computer Society Professional year program in Computing/ICT is a 44-52 week ‘job-readiness’ program introduced to assist former international students who have completed 2 years of study in Australia to obtain relevant workplace skills in their chosen occupation. The program also helps in effectively increase their employment skills and employability. This in turn help to address Australia’s skill shortages in the ICT industry.

The course structure goes like this –

Business and Communications: Completed over a period of 120 hours this typically puts an emphasis on report writing, lead and participate in meetings, negotiation skills, preparing and giving presentations, and appropriate use of language to successfully interact with colleagues, management and clients.

Australian Workplace Culture: In the ACS Professional Year program the Australian Workplace Culture course has been designed to focus on common work practices and values operating in the Australian workplace. It teaches about managing and responding to employer expectations, workplace diversity, career planning including resume writing and interview skills, facilitation skills, awareness of cultural values, and personal skills training.

Internship: In case of Australian Computer Society Professional year program, this internship course however stands as the most significant aspect. The internship placement will be for a minimum period of 240 hours and is normally 12 weeks.

Professional Environments: Typically the Professionalism in ICT is designed to demonstrate what it means to be a professional in a chosen field. This course provide the opportunity to develop and maintain an e-portfolio. Issues related to Business, Legal and Ethical content in the workplace is also covered. The online module is for 12 weeks and runs parallel to the student internship.
